Curse or Blessing for the African Music Market?

Music Video Presentation #2 // Benjamin Lebrave
11.00 am – 11.30 am

As an introduction to our discussion, this short selection of music videos highlights how digital tools are reshaping the music business throughout Africa.

Discussion

Digital technologies are facilitating music production and distribution. At the same time only a minority of people in African countries have access to internet and digital media. How does the ongoing digitalization change the African music market? Which role do digital and social networks play in reaching local and global audiences? These questions will be discussed by Yoel Kenan from the digital music platform Africori (South Africa), Benjamin Lebrave from the label Akwaaba Music (Ghana), Georg Milz from Outhere Records (Germany) and the music journalist Phiona Okumu from AfriPOP.

Host: Jenny Fatou Mbaye

Africa Music Convention

The Africa Music Convention is a platform for African and German musicians and music fans in order to develop and implement joint projects. On 4 and 5 September, the Africa Music Convention will present concerts, lectures and debates as part of the Berlin Music Week. All concerts will be a blend of German and African artists from hip hop to electro. The Africa Music Convention is presented by the Stiftung Partnerschaft mit Afrika e.V. within the frame of the programme COMENGA with financial support of The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
