Panel – 4. September

14:00 - 16:00

The socio-political role of music, lyrics and concerts

Music Video Presentation #1 // Biko Mutsaurwa
2.00 pm – 2.30 pm

The music videos in this presentation represent the diverse fronts of cultural activism that hip-hop activists on the African continent are engaging in, giving voice to a generation that seeks freedom from oppression and exploitation.

The Shoko Music Festival in Zimbabwe is striving for „social change and democracy“. The Berlin-based music label Springstoff claims: „We are saving the world!” Lyrics that comment on society and politics have a long tradition in many African countries. What is the potential of social influence through music and how can you make yourself be heard? Biko Mutsaurwa from the Afrikan Hiphop Caravan (Zimbabwe), Faisal Kiwewa from the festival organization Bayimba (Uganda), Amadou Fall Ba from the Hiphop-Center Africulturban (Senegal) and Anna Gross from Springstoff (Germany) will be discussing African and German perspectives on the topic.

Host: Ruth Daniel (Agencia, Un-Convention)
